5 Questions to Ask Web Hosts before You Buy
There are many things need to think about when you are looking for a cheap web hosting plan. Some questions you have to ask the cheap hosting provider before you sign up. If you ignore these questions, you may get surprise when the problems come out.
1. How much do I need to pay for the domain name if I transfer to other hosts?
Many cheap hosting providers offer free domain for life or free domain for initial contract period. When you cancel your contract with current web host and transfer to other web hosting providers, your current web host may ask you pay domain registration fee.
There is big difference of domain registration fee with different web hosts. With some web hosts, you can not find this information from their websites. You have to ask them. The average price is around $10/year; but I know some cheap hosting providers charge $19.95/year for domain registration if you transfer to other hosts.
2. Who is going to be the owner with free domain registration?
Domain name likes a brand name or companies’ name on internet. People identify your website through your domain name. When you register a domain name, you have to be sure that you are the owner of this domain.
Many cheap hosting providers offer free domain registration and free WHOIS privacy service. When you want to use these services, make sure that the domain will be registered under your name. The web hosts may not intend to steal anybodies’ domain names, but you can not tell that the domain registration system never makes mistakes. When you decide to use WHOIS privacy service, be sure that you can control to activate or cancel this service at anytime.
3. What are your payment methods of refund?
Be careful with payment methods of refund. When you cancel your account at any reasons, you hope that you could get refund less than any charges. But sometimes the web hosts only give hosting credit instead of refund even the cancellation is under 30-day-money-back-guarantee.
Why? Some web hosts only pay refund to customers who made payments through their credit cards when they sign up their hosting account. That means if you didn’t use credit card to pay, you are not going to get the refund money back, you may get hosting credit.
If you can not guarantee that you are not going to cancel the hosting contract before it finished, it’s better to check refund information with the hosting provider.
4. If your websites have to use specific hosting solutions, ask the web host if those solutions are included in the hosting plan.
Some cheap hosting plans offer good hosting services, some offer poor services. For example, dedicated IP is not free with many cheap hosting plans. If you have to use a software that is not included in the plan, the software maybe available but setup fee maybe charged by web host.
5. How much does it all cost?
When you know all answers of your hosting questions and decide to sign up with the web host, write down each item and calculate the total price yourself; then it’s time to ask the web host – how much dose is all cost? If you get the same price as your calculation, congratulations, you both understand each other. You can sign up in peace of mind. Nevertheless, the web host gives you a price that is not same as your calculation sometime. There is something wrong. Find it out and correct it.
Asking questions is always the best way to understand your web host and your hosting plan. If you can keep the questioning and answering email, online chatting, or phone call record, that would be great for further references.
