How to switch to new web host without downtime?

Many webmasters don’t satisfy with their web hosts and have to stay with them, because they think that switching to a new web host is too complicated. They don’t want the down time when they move their website, re-set domain name servers, change email setting. The switching can be a very smooth process and have no downtime if we follow the steps.

website downtime1. The first step is keeping your existing web hosting account while you are finding the new host. Make sure don’t cancel your old hosting plan, and don’t tell them you are planning to cancel. If your existing web host knows your want to cancel your account, they could terminate your web site early. That will cause the downtime.

2. Sign up the new web hosting account. At this moment, you should have two hosting accounts.

3. Download your entire old web site. You can use a FTP program to download all files, or use cPanel backup. Then upload your entire web site to your new web hosting account. Your new web host may offer Free website transfer service, you can ask them to help if you like.

4. After you have moved all website’s files to new web hosting account, it’s time to change your domain name servers (DNS setting). Go to your domain name control panel to change the DNS to your new web host. Usually, the web hosts will provide their DNS information in your welcome email as soon as they confirm your sign-up. You should get confirmation email regarding to the DNS change.

5. Once your DNS changes have been made, it takes about 24 to 48 hours for the domain name fully propagated. During this two day period your DNS is propagating world wide, and your site will be bouncing from the old host to the new host every other minute randomly. After waiting for 48 hours, your site will be running on your new host.

6. Now you can cancel your old web hosting account.

If you completed all the above steps you have successfully switched web hosts with no downtime at all.
