(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Australian telecommunications provider Telstra (www.telstra.com.au) and US-based technology consulting firm Accenture (www.accenture.com) announced on Monday that they will launch a new Product Innovation Lab in Melbourne to develop cloud computing solutions for Australia and New Zealand customers.

Telstra and Accenture established a strategic relationship in April 2010 with the goal of helping orgnizations build their businesses around cloud, according to the press release.

In June, Telstra announced that it would invest more than $800 million in its cloud services over the next five years, so clearly this is the result of at least some of that investment.

The lab will be hosted in Telstra’s facility and will serve as an “Australian innovation hub,” according to the press release.

According to the press release, the lab will enable the development of business oriented technology solutions for enterprise and government.

Telstra chief technology officer Dr. Hugh Bradlow says the new lab will boost Telstra’s capabilities in providing hosted cloud services with Accenture. Telstra offers Infrastructure as a Service as well as Software as a Service cloud solutions.

“We know Australian organizations are increasingly looking to the cloud for their IT services and the lab will prove a powerful tool to help us develop the best possible services for our customers into the future,” Bradlow said in a statement.

Dr. Gavin Michael, chief technology innovation officer at Accenture said that with its existing partnership, it was a natural step to launch an innovation lab to support local development of cloud services in Australia.

“Australia is a proven early adopter of technology, and with the growing interest in cloud computing, Australia is an ideal place to establish a Product Innovation Lab. This will not only allow us to bring globally proven cloud-based solutions to Australia quickly, it will also help our joint clients continue to lead the charge in innovative practices,” Michael said in a statement.

The lab will offer technology demonstrations, as well as provide information to government and enterpirse customers on cloud trends, according to the press release.

At the beginning of August, data center services provider Equinix opened a $65 million Sydney data center.
