(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — web hosting and telecommunications provider 8×8 (www.8×8.com) announced on Wednesday that it has named Vance Raeside director of federal sales. In this position, Raeside is responsible for overseeing sales activity with federal, state and local government agencies, according to the press release.

8×8 has been stepping up its game in the hosting market with a few acquisitions. Most recently, 8×8 acquired web host Zerigo. Last year, 8×8 acquired managed and cloud hosting provider Central Host for $1 million.

Federal contracts are incredibly competitive for web hosting providers to win, and involve a lot of time and paperwork. By supporting a sales initiative directed towards government organizations, web hosts are in a better position to win the contracts and take advantage of the government’s move to cloud services. At the beginning of August, web host Horizon appointed James MacDougall as vice president of federal sales.

According to the press release, Raeside has 13 years selling into the public sector as manager of federal sales at Shortel, and manager of business/systems integrator partners at Nortel Government Solutions.

At Shoretel, Raeside developed and launched its market strategy for sales to US federal government agencies. According to the press release, this strategy translated to 60 new federal channel partners.

While at Nortel Government Solutions, Raeside manged relationships with partners and systems integrators including General Dynamics, SAIC and Ronco. At Nortel, he met sales quotas in excess of $36 million.

“Vance’s deep knowledge of the IP communications industry coupled with his outstanding track record in federal government sales is a tremendous asset for 8×8 as we expand our presence in the public sector,” Kim Niederman, senior vice president of worldwide sales at 8×8 said in a statement. “With government agencies at federal, state and local levels adopting cloud technologies at unprecedented rates, 8×8 is well positioned to meet this growing demand with a wide range of cloud-based SaaS and IaaS solutions.”

According to the press release, 8×8 has several existing federal government deployments secured through joint collaboration with its government teaming partner Level 3 Communications.

“I’m thrilled to be joining a company as nimble and highly regarded as 8×8, especially in light of the Federal Government CIO’s statement earlier this year that an estimated $20 billion of its $80 billion in IT spending is a potential for migration to cloud computing solutions,” Raeside said in a statement. “It’s amazing what 8×8 has accomplished in a very short period of time — from successfully penetrating the SMB market with VoIP and UC solutions to moving upmarket into serving the enterprise and government sectors to introducing a complete suite of cloud hosting solutions. This is fantastic time to be part of the cloud revolution and I’m proud to be associated with one of the industry’s premier service providers.”

Recently, 8×8 says it won a contract with the City of Garden Grove, California, to provider cloud-based disaster recovery services for its VMware vSphere virtualization platform.
